Martena Wilson
Martena Wilson was born in the United States, and began to take Iyengar yoga classes at the age of 9 with her parents. She started in the Iyengar yoga tradition. In her 20's she began the practice of Ashtanga Yoga and has studied with teachers like David Swenson, and Pattabhi Jois. Yoga has always been a part of her life, as well as spiritual studies in Hinduism and Buddhism. She has a natural interest in yoga and meditation practices.
In 2001, while completing her MBA in entrepreneurship she opened a small yoga studio in Riverside, CA with Scott Miller. Within one year the studio expanded, and within a few years 2 more opened. Martena is the sole owner of all studios which continue to grow. She has added a research institute and Riverside County's first environmentally friendly yoga studio. Martena's practice encouraged her to travel to India to experience yoga in its' true home. Surprisingly, people told her India was too dangerous and she should not go. Traveling to India changed her life, and added so much to Inland Yoga and the Riverside Yoga community. Martena also started, Hunnyfly Holidays, World Yoga Training, Universal Yoga Tours and Hunnyfly.com (clothing).
While in India, Martena and Bhuvaneshwari Makharia started The Purab Paschim © Institute because they have very similar backgrounds and interests in yoga and spiritual studies. Also, they both felt there was a need to bring people to India to study yoga. There is a trend in yoga studies to travel and do "vacation" yoga tours, but few groups go to India and really study yoga in all its' forms. Both feel that yoga study in India should be a part of teaching yoga and that's why the institute was founded.
